Carla's Caramels

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup light corn syrup, such as Karo
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 cup half-and-half or whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:

  1. Mix together all ingredients except vanilla in large pan over medium-high heat
  2. Cook to 248° F on candy thermometer (learn more about candy temperatures)
  3. Remove from heat, adding vanilla
  4. Pour into buttered cookie sheet with sides or jelly roll pan
  5. Allow mixture to cool
  6. Cut into pieces and wrap in waxed paper or cellophane
